The more expensive Long Range and Performance variants, which come with dual electric motors, are more swiftly paced.
Although the 18-inch all-season tires on the standard Model 3 may not have the best grip, they nonetheless deliver enough traction for vigorous street driving. The forceful stability control system, however, slightly limits the exciting driving experience. But even in the world of electric cars, this Tesla Model 3 manages to provide a commendable driving experience.
The Model 3 accelerates quickly, smoothly, and almost silently, as is typical for most electric vehicles, with the electric engine generating powerful acceleration from a stop. It moves really quickly, especially in some trim levels. The rear-wheel-drive Long Range variant we tested accelerated quickly from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds. With a 0 to 60 mph sprint time of just 3.5 seconds, the Model 3 Performance kicks things up a notch and is noticeably 0.5 seconds quicker than our long-range Model 3 Long Range.
The batteries are housed beneath the floor in every Tesla, even the Model 3, which creates a low center of gravity. In contrast to the mpg rating for gasoline vehicles, the efficiency of an electric vehicle is measured by how few kWh it uses per 100 miles.

How To Lock Tesla Model 3
On a Tesla Model 3, use the external door knobs as follows:
- To push the wide section of the door handle, use your thumb. The handle will turn in your direction as a result.
- The door can then be opened by tugging on either the handle or the door’s edge.
It’s worth noting that the handle retracts automatically when you’re done.
When a door or trunk is open, the touchscreen will display the Door Open indicator light.

Warning: Be careful not to allow fingers, jewelry, acrylic nails, or other objects to be pinched by the door or door handle mechanism when operating the door handle. Damage or injury could arise from not doing so.
Opening Doors from the Interior:
The Model 3’s doors are electrically operated. While seated inside, you can open a door by pushing the button on the internal door handle and then moving the door open.
Note: You can activate child locks (see Child Locks) to stop kids from opening the back doors. You can raise the manual door release that is situated in front of the window switches if the Model 3 loses electricity and you need to open the front door.
Reminder: Only the front doors have manual door releases.
CAUTION: Manual door releases should only be used when the Model 3 is without electricity. Use the button at the top of the inner door handle when the Model 3 is powered up.
Interior Locking and Unlocking:
By tapping the lock icon on the touchscreen while seated inside the Model 3, you can lock and unlock all doors and trunks. Depending on whether the doors are locked or unlocked, the icon modifies.
A second click of the Park button at the end of the drive stalk will also unlock the doors. This button can be pressed once to activate Park and once more to open the doors.
Walk-Away Door Lock:
If you walk away with your phone key or connected key fob (if ordered after roughly October 1, 2019), doors and trunks may lock automatically. By selecting Controls > Locks > Walk-Away Door Lock, you can enable or disable this feature.
The external lights flash once and, if Fold Mirrors is turned on, the mirrors fold when the doors lock. Touch Controls > Locks > Lock Confirmation Sound to also hear a confirmation sound when the Model 3 locks.
If, The Model 3 doesn’t lock by itself
- The Model 3 is parked at the spot you’ve specified as Home when you check the Exclude Home option. See Home, Work, and Favorite Destinations for instructions on how to give a place the designation “Home.”
- The Model 3 has detected a phone key or linked key fob.
- A door or trunk is not shut all the way.
- Bluetooth is not enabled on the phone key.
After you exit the car and shut all of the doors if the Model 3 detects an authenticated key for a few minutes, the Walk-Away Lock is disabled, and the doors do not lock as you walk away. In this situation, you will need to manually lock your car until after your subsequent drive.
The driver does not use the driver’s door to get out of the vehicle.
Note: Even with the walk-way door Lock turned on, it is ultimately your responsibility to make sure your car is locked.
Drive Away Locking:
Model 3 automatically locks all doors (including the trunks) when your driving speed exceeds 5 mph (8 km/h).
Driver Door Unlock Mode:
When you first unlock the Model 3, just the driver door is unlocked when Controls > Locks > Driver Door Unlock Mode is enabled. Only when a key is located on the driver’s side of the car, not the passenger side, does the driver’s door unlock. Use the touchscreen, a smartphone app, the key fob, or the button at the top of the interior driver door handle to unlock the other doors.
Car Left Open Notifications:
Touch Controls > Locks > Car Left Open Notifications to sign up for mobile notifications if a door, trunk, or window is left open or whenever the Model 3 is unintentionally left unlocked.
The rear doors of the Model 3 have child locks to keep children from using the interior release buttons to open them. Touch Controls > Locks > Child Lock on the touchscreen. You can decide whether to lock the child lock on both of the back doors or simply one of them by selecting Left or Right.
Warning: It is recommended that you turn on child locks when children are seated in the rear seats.
Unlock on Park:
You have the option to unlock all doors when Model 3 comes to a halt and Park is engaged. On the Park screen, tap Controls > Locks > Unlock to enable or disable this option.
Note: If set to OFF, you can unlock all doors by pressing the Park button a second time.
How To Turn off Tesla Model 3
To turn off a Tesla Model 3, you can follow these steps:
- Press the button at the end of the drive stalk to put the vehicle in park once you’re done driving.
- The touchscreen on the Model 3 turns off automatically if you leave it alone while carrying your phone key and key fob.
- The Model 3 also shuts off on its own after 30 minutes in Park, regardless of who is in the driver’s seat.
Note: When the Model 3 senses that you are getting out of the car (for instance, when the driver’s seatbelt is unbuckled and the car is virtually at a stop), it automatically shifts into Park. When you open the door to exit, the Model 3 moves into Park if you are in Neutral. You must switch on Transport Mode (see Instructions for Transporters) in order to maintain Neutral on the Model 3.
Power Cycling the Vehicle: You can power cycle Model 3 if it demonstrates unusual behavior or displays a nondescript alert.
- Shift into Park.
- Touch Controls > Safety > Power Off on the touchscreen.
- Do not interact with the car for at least two minutes. Avoid using the touchscreen, the brake pedal, opening the doors, etc.
- To wake the car up after two minutes, depress the brake pedal or unlock the door.
If the vehicle is not reacting as expected or if the touchscreen is having problems, this procedure may be helpful.
Note: Restarting the touchscreen is advised before doing a complete power cycle if the touchscreen is unresponsive or acting strangely (see Restarting the Touchscreen).
